I have always had a deep desire to understand others, and an instinct to comfort people who are in pain. From about the age of six my parents acknowledged my joy in meeting new people and my natural interest in understanding what makes them tick. They pointed out these gifts of mine, giving me confidence and encouraging me to do what comes naturally, which is how I've come to do this work. I love to work with clients to do the same for them: discover your unique gifts, and encourage and support you in your journey to live life fully as you are meant to live.
I began providing crisis counseling services in 1988, and since then I have been lucky enough to enjoy two professional careers: Public Health Administration and Policy, and Individual and Couples Therapy. I enjoy combining my left brain analytical side with my right brain intuitive side. In therapy this means I can often sort out what feels confusing or chaotic and arrange the issues into understandable and solvable components, all within a safe and accepting environment where emotions can be expressed and explored, and everyone is appreciated and valued.
My Therapy Approach
The therapeutic modalities I most commonly use include: family systems therapies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Discernment Counseling and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). In the course of treatment I am likely to draw on ideas from one or more therapeutic methodology.
In our work together we are likely to explore both your present day life and your history. Your history is not who you are, but it has shaped you, and I believe understanding it can help you gain insight to help you deal with with your present circumstances and bring about the changes you desire.
I encourage you to take an active role in our work together, to ask questions, voice concerns, and honestly share your thoughts and feelings. You are welcome and encouraged to include other significant people in our sessions. I often collaborate with other professionals, such as medical care providers or other therapists, to coordinate and optimize your care. At all times I invite your feedback to ensure our work is meeting your needs.
My Licensure and Education
I am licensed by the State of Washington as a Marriage and Family Therapist (credential #LF60595316). I hold a Master's Degree in Psychology from the LIOS Graduate College of Saybrook University, and a Master's Degree in Health Services Administration from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado.
As part of my continuing education as a therapist I attend trainings and workshops every year to enhance my clinical skills and to provide you with the most up-to-date and effective ideas and therapeutic techniques. I also obtain on-going consultation from other experienced therapists in order to provide you the best possible care.
